Happy mid-September everyone! Isn’t this sunny, warm weather just glorious?
We have a few important updates and date changes, including two fun Halloween theme swaps, so please read on and take note….
• NEW!!! FVMQG’s Halloween Swaps! For the October meeting, participation is encouraged but optional.
Yes, swaps PLURAL!
At our October meeting we’ll be having two swaps. You are welcome to participate in either swap, both swaps, or neither swap.
The first swap is for a halloween themed mugrug or mini quilt. You can do anything that you’d like – use halloween fabrics (there are some great modern ones out there!) or halloween inspired solids, paperpiece a halloween themed pattern (also lots of great ones out there!), embroider or thread sketch something halloweeny, whatever your heart desires. Not a fan of pumpkins and witches? What about spider webs, black birds, and spooky trees?
As usual, please keep the word MODERN in mind, and make something fabulous! To make it fair to everyone, please aim for a maximum size of 8†x 10†and finish the edges. It can be any shape you wish, and if you decide to add a hanger on the back, that’s awesome, but it’s not required. We’ll be posting some halloween inspiration on the blog later this week, so keep your eyes open!
The second swap is for those of you who are too busy sewing halloween costumes to concentrate on patchwork, and those of us who love halloween (and swaps) so much that we can’t resist a second swap! We’ll be swapping bags of halloween goodies, quilty and otherwise. Your bag should include two halloween-inspired fat quarters (modern prints or solids, please follow the same guidelines as our monthly fq swap), and then it’s up to you what else you’d like to include, up to an approximately $10 value. Your bag might include sewing stuff like thread, trims or ribbon, a little halloween toy, or the most obvious halloween treat – candy! Feel free to use a purchased bag/container for your goodies, this is supposed to be the low-stress option! Dollar stores and craft stores both have great low-cost packaging options, if you don’t have the time to whip up a themed gift bag.
Don’t forget, these are TWO separate swaps! If you participate in both, you probably won’t be swapping with the same person, so please don’t bundle your mini quilt up with your goodie package. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
• REMINDER: If you want to sign up for the October paper piecing workshop with Sonja:
Paper piecing workshop with Sonja Callaghan, Artisania
** Please note date change: Saturday October 6th 10-4pm, cost: $40 (includes two patterns and instructions).
Learn how to paper piece in the least painful way possible, with Sonja Callaghan holding your hand every step of the way. We’ll use our finished blocks to make a quick and easy tote bag.
Gnomeling, mushroom and lil’ fox patterns provided, along with extra templates and instructions for making your tote bag.

• Our super fun and popular Destash event which was scheduled for the October meeting is now being moved to the NOVEMBER meeting.
This gives you more time to prepare your goodies to bring to destash and swap!
Here are the general guidelines for the destash:
NOVEMBER Destash!! Participation is encouraged but optional.
We’re giving some advance notice as our November meeting, Thursday November 8, as it will be our next De-Stash! For those who missed out on the first one earlier this year, it was so much fun! You can check out the blog post from our first destash here: http://fvmodernquilt.com/monthly-meetings/march-and-april-meeting-wrap-ups
Start preparing now & dig out anything you want to destash & swap for something new!
As before, here are some general guidelines:
We’d like to give you the chance to clean up your sewing room, sweep away the dust on old craft supplies, share crafty/sewing/quilting books or magazines, and share some crafty goodies with other members of our guild who might be able to use them.
What is it that they say, “One quilter’s trash is another quilter’s treasure!â€
Here’s how to play along if you’re interested in joining in the fun:
Everyone who brings something can participate. You should bring at least a small bag full of stuff so everyone contributes a fair amount of items to destash. Everything will be placed on tables and we’ll let everyone grab what they want on the count of 3! Sharpen those elbows ladies!
Those who don’t contribute can help themselves after everyone who did contribute is done if they want.
Stuff that’s allowed:
Anything sewing or quilting related:
– fabrics of any kind
– crafty/sewing/quilting magazine & books
– packaged bags of scraps with pieces at least 2″x2″ (put them in a ziploc or small bag)
Plus any miscellaneous craft supplies you’d like to destash, for example:
beads, felt, paper, scrapbooky stuff, yarn, crafting tools, etc. etc.
Keep in mind though we do not want a bunch of garbage leftover at the end- we want anything that’s left to be usable and to be donated to a local thrift store or any other guild or group that can use it.
Please note what’s NOT allowed
– Garbage/small loose scraps of fabric/batting
– used, damaged, stained, or worn fabric unless it’s vintage and still usable
– anything you wouldn’t want yourself- as in you’d throw it away rather than donate it
Anything leftover will go to the thrift store/charity/MCC quilt groups
We’ll need to designate 2-4 people to do the dropoffs/donations/recycle- any volunteers please let us know & be ready to take some stuff home/to the thrift store drop offs after the meeting.
• We are also extending the Kona Modern Quilts Challenge to be due for the November meeting.
If you are participating, remember finished projects are now due for the November meeting to take photos of and to share with the design team at Robert Kaufman.
Bent Needle in Mission has a great selection of the KMQ prints and has several coordinating Kona solids in stock, with more to come! We encourage you to shop local and support our LQS!
Vicki and Sharel of the Bent Needle are wonderfully supportive of our guild -and super sweet to boot!- and are now offering a 10% discount to us!
Please mention this before they ring your purchase in to take advantage of such a generous offer and we’d like to send a big thank you to the Bent Needle for supporting us so generously!
Once your project is done, they’d love to see it so feel free to drop in and show them what you’ve been working on!
Further notes & the agenda for the October meeting will be sent closer to the meeting.
Thank you for making the FVMQG the fun and inspiring group it is!!
