Third meeting of the FVMQG Thursday, November 18, 2010

Our third meeting was held Thursday November 18th and we sewed a quilt top for charity. It was then assembled and quilted by member Michelle.

The third meeting of the Fraser Valley Modern Quilt Guild was held Thursday, November 18th, 7-9pm at Quilt Essentials, Abbotsford. There was a great turnout, 16 members joined us to share and sew!
You can check out the slide show of all of the meeting photos here.

We had a fun show and tell and saw everyone’s handmade nametags- including Theresa’s very clever “C” Cup!- and mug rug challenge pieces. As part of show & tell, ideas for the next meeting were discussed, and a thread has been started here if you have any suggestions you’d like to add.
Then we got on with the sewing!

Lysa coordinated a quilt top sew-a-long, and everyone joined in to fill the various tasks to complete a small quilt top! Thanks to Lysa for coordinating it and to everyone who participated and donated fabric scraps. And huge thanks to Michelle and Nancy who will be assembling and quilting our first group quilt! Members will be taking turns volunteering to assemble and quilt upcoming projects to help share the work evenly. Donations of fabric for blocks and batting are very welcome!

The quilts we make will be donated to charity, one of which is the Jean Petty Legacy Home near Nariobi, Kenya. You can find out more about the orphanage on their Facebook page here,
(full website coming shortly).
Their goal is to have children from infancy to young adulthood, and when the child leaves the orphanage, either by adoption or growing up, they will take their quilt they have been given with them as a reminder of their childhood. The orphanage also has a friend in Surrey who can coordinate shipping to Kenya at no cost to us, upcoming shipping date will be in the New Year, we’re still waiting to hear for a final date, more info to come as we get it.

After much laughter and sewing, “Out the door”prizes were awarded, a big huge thanks to everyone who donated a prize to the group!

Our next challenge was introduced, a quick Christmas Tree paper piecing block, that can then be used for placemats, table runners, small quilts, whatever you can dream up!

As a wrap up to the meeting, a group photo was taken and that concluded the meeting!

We’re looking forward to the next one- Thursday, December 16th, 2010, 7-9pm at Quilt Essentials, Abbotsford.
The theme is Holiday PJ Party, so you can come wearing your favourite comfy jammies (or comfy sewing wear!).
Feel free to bring treats to share with the group and out-the-door prizes if you’d like to donate.

We’ll be sewing a Disappearing 9 Patch quilt top, so you are asked to bring a pre-assembled 9 patch block as follows:
9- 5″ squares, sewn into a 9 patch block (3 squares across and 3 high for a total of 9 squares) with 1/4” seams.
Colours and fabric choices are up to you- keep in mind they’ll be going to children so any kid-friendly prints or colours will work well!

We will do the Disappearing 9 Patch block cutting and re-assembly into a quilt top at the meeting so just bring your 9 patch block already sewn & pressed.

Please RSVP via the site- more details will be posted shortly in regards to sewing, etc. If you’d like to volunteer as a sew-er for this project, just let us know!

If you have any questions or problems joining the site, please do let us know and we can help!

Also, feel free to post comments or start new discussions on the Forum page. To start a new thread/discussion/topic, click “Post message” on the right side of the screen. Cynthia & her husband Norm are working on a new site that will function much better than what we have now (the hosting plans have changed so our current free plan isn’t working that well as far as editability- we’ll be moving the site to it’s own paid domain/hosting and into WordPress so it will be much easier to use for everyone).

We’re keeping online membership requests moderated- due to spam only. Everyone is welcome and the more the merrier! If you need help or don’t have internet access, please let us know and we can add you as a member to the site. We also have a Facebook group, linked via the main site, feel free to join & share with your friends!

On behalf of the group, we thank you for joining and participating, and look forward to our next meeting in December!
Happy sewing!
