We had so much fun at this meeting, held Thursday January 20, 2011 at Quilt Essentials in Abbotsford. It was standing room only with 23 members in attendance, full of fun and excitement to start the New Year of quilting fun!

We started with a very inspiring show and tell, and along with their amazing quilted creations, special holiday gifts and finds, everyone also got to share how they learned how to sew. So many wonderful and some rather hilarious stories were shared.

Next, Nancy introduced our group challenge, a 3 month Mystery Quilt. The group was given the first set of instructions for fabric requirements, cutting, and beginning to sew the start of the mystery pattern. This will be a fun project to see how everyone works with the given instructions and what everyone comes up with! The remaining steps will be given out in February and March, stay tuned for more!

If anyone was not at the meeting but would like to participate, please email Cynthia for the instructions to get started.

After a break, Lysa gave the group a mini demo on how create her custom resin pins. If you’d like more info, there will be a forum thread on the site where you can ask Lysa more about them.

Then everyone who wanted to participate was given a lunchbag to do a Scrap Swap. The idea is to fill the bag with scraps:

– at least 2″x2″ in size or bigger

– good quality cottons/quilting fabrics- no flannels or other materials

– no junk/garbage/waste or anything you wouldn’t be happy to receive and use yourself

Bring bag your bags full (and tied closed at the top so nobody can peek) to the February meeting, we’ll put them on the table then each grab a new one from the pile!

Discussion in regards to dues and whether we should collect them or do a pay as needed/collection instead, was deferred to next meeting as we ran out of time. We will be discussing at the February meeting and we’d love to hear from those who have experience being in a formal guild or group- whether quilting-related or otherwise, pros and cons, and whether this would be something our group would like to do or not. There are benefits and drawbacks to the options (formal guild or casual group) and we would love everyone’s input as to what we should do, as a group.

Children’s quilts- big thank you’s to the members who brought the sewn tops in. Nancy took them home and will quilt them as her schedule allows- huge thank you to Nancy! We’re still waiting to hear on shipping details, the Kenya side is working to get charity status via FedEx.

We will take a small collection towards batting or if anyone would like to donate some, please feel free!

A group photo was taken and that concluded the meeting!

Huge thank you to Theresa and Quilt Essentials for hosting us!

Wow! What a great meeting we had on Thursday, December 16, 2010! 17 members were in attendance, decked out in their finest comfy jammies and sewing wear!
We started the meeting with a fun show & tell, lots of great holiday projects and challenge tree block projects were shared.

After a hot chocolate and goodies break, (big thanks to everyone who brought some delicious treats to share!) we got into our sewing project of a Disappearing 9-patch. Everyone brought at least one pre-sewn 9 patch block and Theresa demonstrated how to slice them and re-arrange them into a new quilt top, that looks much more complicated than it is and makes a great quilt top layout! We arranged the blocks into 4 separate tops, and we quickly ran out of time to do the actual sewing but 4 members volunteered to bring the sorted and labelled (thanks to everyone who helped design, layout and sort and sew the blocks) piles of blocks home and stitch them into tops to be brought back to the next meeting- thanks to all who are sewing! Member Nancy so generously offered to quilt them- thank you!
The quilts will be going to the Jean Petty Legacy Home in Kenya, Cynthia will be in touch with the coordinator to get some details on when we can ship our quilts to them- most likely spring time in the New Year. Also she will be sending photos of our quilts to the organizer as they are done and will report back with comments from their side. Member Michelle finished the first donation quilt and it is beautiful and she did an amazing job on finishing and quilting it- a huge thank you to her for taking this on, and to everyone who helped to make it! It will be loved and appreciated by a small Kenyan child very soon.

We then awarded door prizes- huge thanks to everyone who donated a prize!- we had lots to give away making it a fun-filled holiday meeting! Then a group photo was taken and that concluded the meeting. (Insider’s joke, “Say “Poop!”)

We thought everyone could use a break after the holiday rush so no challenges were introduced this meeting but we will have some fun things coming up in the New Year including a Mystery Quilt project being coordinated with great help from member Nancy, scrap swaps, a new monthly Featured Member profile on our website, speakers and more! If you would like to coordinate a project, event, demo, tutorial, presentation, just let us know- you can email us, post your ideas in the ideas thread in the forums on the website or tell us about your idea at an upcoming meeting and we can help make it happen- the sky’s the limit!

We also wanted to send a huge thank you to Theresa and Quilt Essentials for being such a wonderful host to our group, we’re so thrilled to have her and her expert advice, generosity, and her keeping the store open for our meetings so we can indulge our fabric obsessions! THANK YOU Theresa!

Stay tuned and have a great Holiday season! Thank you for being such a great part of the group and we’ll look forward to seeing you in the New Year!

Next meeting will be Thursday January 20, 2011.
